I took a leap of faith and tried out something that I’ve never tried on my skin before. A whitening/brightening serum from Clarins.

As someone with sensitive skin, any product that involves acids, peeling or alcohol is definitely enough to send me running far, far away in the opposite direction. In addition, whitening/brightening products have a tendency to be less hydrating, and for my skin, I’m less enthusiastic to dry out my skin any further. As well, I’m prone to acne and its devil of a child, acne scars, as well as freckles and a slightly uneven skin tone. In an attempt to rectify this situation seeing as I’m not getting any younger, I did my research and between the Estée Lauder Crescent White Essence and the Clarins Brightening Serum, I decided to go with the latter as opposed to the former as I personally don’t mind that it takes a little longer for a whitening/brightening product to perform.

I did a patch test with the Crescent White as well as the Clarins one at the counter on the skin just behind both of my ears; I didn’t immediately break out in itchy patches nor did I feel a sting when I applied the serum to my skin. With a treatment product that I’ve never really tried before, I’m not looking for a miracle here. I need something that will work with sensitive skin and is fragrance-free, as well as being hydrating, has long-term benefits, and can be used during the day or night or both.

According to the company website, the Brightening Serum contains:

  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerine help to restore the water reserves of the skin to give it more radiance and transparency.
  • Extracts of spergularia and alchemila slow down hyper-pigmentation for a more even and clearer complexion.
  • Extract of ginkgo biloba maintains micro-circulation in the skin to imbue it with the pink glow of good health.

All of this sounds great and awesome, but what does it mean for sensitive skin?

I tried this serum out in the morning first, where I used it right after the Micro Essence and before my daytime moisturizer. I pushed out two pumps of the serum, smoothed it out on my entire face before pressing it in, much like what I would do when I applied my ANR in the evening. I then used a makeup base with an SPF 50+ before continuing with the rest of my makeup. Throughout the day, my skin looked and felt well-hydrated and I didn’t have the itchy blotches that normally would appear after I put on something that my skin is not a fan of. In the evening, I followed my usual night routine, except I added a layer of the ANR II after the Clarins serum and then putting on my nighttime moisturizer.

It’s been a couple of days and so far and my skin has been happy 🙂 I would like to note that although the acne scars and freckles will take some time to heal and lighten up, my skin tone definitely looks great with my makeup after using this serum; there’s a bit of a glow peeking out from within and I look better rested than I have ever been.

Here’s to hoping that this is a keeper for sensitive skin girls everywhere! 🙂
